General Appeal 2024

Four-year-old Clara cupped her hands gently around the Purple Martin nestling as naturalist and educator Beth Sullivan explained why these birds are so important. Clara’s eyes lit up as the tiny bird settled itself in and rested its beak on her finger. They were at Avalonia’s Knox preserve, where Avalonia maintains an active Martin colony.
Purple Martins have lost many of their natural homes. Your support has helped Avalonia create and protect vital habitats for purple martins and countless species throughout southeastern Connecticut. You support Avalonia because, like us, you understand the critical importance of protecting open space for all species that rely on it, including humans. For 56 years, Avalonia’s preserves have provided habitat for wildlife. They offer cleaner air and water and help people feel more connected to nature. And they introduce a whole new generation of children to the wonder of our world.
This year, please consider a gift of $100, $500, $1,000 or even $10,000 to Avalonia Land Conservancy.
Together we have preserved over 5,000 acres in southeastern Connecticut. Acres where birds sing, and wildlife thrives. But there is so much more to do.
Here are several actions you can take to support Avalonia:
- Visit our donation page to make your gift. Consider signing up for a monthly or quarterly donation or make a multi-year pledge.
- Consider a legacy gift by naming Avalonia as a beneficiary of your estate or appreciated assets. Are you over 72? If so, you are eligible to make a distribution gift from your IRA.
- Match your gift through a participating employer or an association.
After gently placing the tiny bird back in its nest, Clara and Beth continued to count all the other nestlings in the colony. Their tally was one of the highest yet, showing that our efforts are working.
Thank you for standing with us and for the Purple Martin. Together, we can make a lasting difference. Whatever amount you choose to donate, we are grateful for your vital role in caring for the land.
Sincerely,
Dennis S. Main
