Copps Brook Preserve Pasture Fencing Repairs

On November 12, 2025, the Stonington Town Committee (STC) was able to undertake a long-awaited fencing repair project at Copps Brook Preserve on Al Harvey Road. While STC had previously received a grant from the Stonington Garden Club for equipment and the purchase of supplies and lumber, it was not until Dominion Energy (Millstone) sent us an able-bodied team of 11 volunteers for a much-needed boost in people-power to make things start to happen.

The team was able to remove the middle fencing, replace all the rotten posts around the perimeter, remove the rotten rails, and repair the fencing that runs along the road. Wood was de-nailed and sorted into two piles: a recyclable lumber pile and another for disposal. Other smaller tasks were also accomplished.

Despite having a total team of 15 workers putting in a full day of labor, we were unable to complete the repairs that day. The Dominion team was willing to return to complete the job, but due to scheduling issues and cold weather, the second effort did not get scheduled until June 25, 2026. We are pleased to report now that new lumber was purchased using the remainder of the grant funding and a second Dominion work party (10 volunteers) was able to complete repairs of the remaining three sides of the perimeter fencing by installing new rails, cleaning up all of the old rotted rails, and disposing of them at the Stonington Transfer Station.

We can’t thank the Stonington Garden Club enough for the grant funding and for their patience. Also, special thanks to Dominion Millstone Power Station for providing highly motivated work parties for two days, and to the Town of Stonington Transfer Station for allowing disposal of waste lumber at no cost to Avalonia.
