In 2018 Avalonia initiated a climate resiliency forestry plan at this preserve, including the planting of many tree species projected to do well in the face of ongoing climate change. While most of these have succeeded in becoming established, we do need to help them out by cutting back surrounding vegetation, including grey birch suckers and saplings. Look around our properties for all types of photo ideas, from tiny leaf-dwelling frogs, tree-hugging nuthatches, turtles, and colorful butterflies. You never know what you will find! The other photo contest categories are Wildflowers and Landscapes. You may submit 2 photos in each category. You can get them here: https://rhodeislandpermits.recaccess.com šŸš Please keep in mind that Sandy Point Island is home to American Oystercatchers, Piping Plovers, and recently, Least Terns have been seen scouting the area. All of these species are threatened or endangered and are protected by law. The island is also home to gulls, geese, and ducks. WhileĀ peopleĀ areĀ welcome,Ā petsĀ areĀ not.Ā NoĀ petsĀ areĀ allowedĀ onĀ theĀ island.Ā They are perceived as predators, are often responsible for nest destruction, and are a major disturbance to the birds as they feed.
