The Dean’s Mill Bridge Project in Stonington is Complete!
The Dean’s Mill bridge project in Stonington is complete! Talk about a team effort!
Upon receipt of a grant from the Stonington Garden Club, the Stonington Town Committee was able to purchase the lumber and supplies. To get to the two sites involved, some tree clearing was required (thank you, Toby Glaza, Avalonia’s Director of Stewardship, and Lili Kane, Avalonia’s summer intern), clearing of brush to walk in and stage the lumber (thank you, Beth Sullivan and Nancy Spillane), carry in the lumber (thank you MaryEllen Mateleska and five volunteers from Mystic Aquarium), and John Clarke and Mark Hibbard, for constructing the stream bridges.
The Deans Mill Preserve is part of a larger greenway protecting diverse habitats and providing hiking trails from Denison land, the Nature Center, and Coogan Farm. The bridges replace the stepping stones that were always wet and mossy, and create a safer and sturdier passage for hikers of all ages. Well done!
Thank you to the Stonington Garden Club for your generous grant!
