Shorebird Stewards Needed For Sandy Point Island

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and Avalonia Land Conservancy (ALC) are looking for shorebird steward volunteers at Sandy Point Island!

Together, the USFWS and ALC manage the Island for migrating shorebirds such as piping plovers, American oystercatchers, and least terns, while supporting passive recreation. These vulnerable birds rely on us to “Share the Shore,” because our beach season is their nesting season.

WHAT IS NECESSARY TO VOLUNTEER? If you have your own transportation to Sandy Point Island, enjoy walking the beach talking with visitors about shorebirds and conservation, and appreciate flexible days/times, then VOLUNTEERING AS A SHOREBIRD STEWARD IS FOR YOU!

Volunteers will be provided:

  • USFWS Volunteer Shirt and Hat
  • On-site outreach training
  • Information about the beach pass program
  • Bird Identification Flyer
  • Interesting facts on the shorebirds to share with visitors

Volunteering is rewarding and provides an important service, for both visitors and wildlife. If interested, please email USFWS at RhodeIslandComplex@fws.gov or call (401) 364.9124.
