The 2023 Avalonia Photo Contest is now open for su The 2023 Avalonia Photo Contest is now open for submissions!  One of the categories is Wildlife. Look around our properties for all types of photo ideas, from tiny leaf-dwelling frogs, tree-hugging nuthatches, turtles, and colorful butterflies. You never know what you will find! The other photo contest categories are Wildflowers and Landscapes. You may submit 2 photos in each category. Photos don’t have to be taken during the contest (now until August 31st,) but they must be taken at Avalonia properties. You can get them here: https://rhodeislandpermits.recaccess.com 🐚 Please keep in mind that Sandy Point Island is home to American Oystercatchers, Piping Plovers, and recently, Least Terns have been seen scouting the area. All of these species are threatened or endangered and are protected by law. The island is also home to gulls, geese, and ducks. While people are welcome, pets are not. No pets are allowed on the island. They are perceived as predators, are often responsible for nest destruction, and are a major disturbance to the birds as they feed. As you head out to enjoy our properties this sprin As you head out to enjoy our properties this spring and summer, be sure to take some photos along the way and submit them to our second annual Photo Contest. The contest opens for submissions on May 15th and continues through August 31st. Participants can submit two photos in each of the following categories: Wildlife Be sure to look all around for wildlife when you hike our properties. Look up at the trees for birds, on the ground for salamanders, and on flowers for butterflies and dragonflies. They are all fair game for this category. Wildflowers Be on the lookout for some of the many species of wildflowers on our properties, like the delicate Queen Anne’s Lace or the hearty coneflower. Take a moment to stop and smell the flowers…and then take a photo! Landscapes We have many beautiful views available on our properties to capture with your camera, from hilly overlooks to fast-flowing brooks. The only decision is which view to use for your photo. Only photos taken at Avalonia properties are eligible for the contest. Please submit digital files (in JPG format) below when the contest opens on May 15th!  The top winner in each category will receive an Avalonia gift basket, which includes some swag and gift certificates.
