Annual Monitoring of Preserves

As the leaves begin to drop and sightlines in the woods improve, Avalonia stewards take advantage of this increased visibility to focus on one of our more important responsibilities, annual monitoring.

Each of our preserves and conservation easements requires an annual monitoring visit, which involves, among other things, walking boundaries and portions of the interior, checking for adequate signage, looking for any potential safety issues, making sure that the conservation values of the property haven’t been negatively impacted, and … documenting it all!

This critical work means, by year’s end, the drafting of more than 100 individual reports covering over 5300 acres of diverse habitat. While it sounds like a daunting task, and it is, it is made easier with the help of longtime volunteers as well as newcomers.  It is a great way to spend time outdoors during the beautiful autumnal weather and there is no better way to experience the breadth and depth of Avalonia’s preserves than to be a part of this important effort.  To learn more about how you might participate contact stewardship@avalonialc.org.
