A Sowing Party with the Groton Town Committee

By Elizabeth Sorensen

On a chilly morning in January, Janet Anderson hosted members of the Groton Town Committee, along with Joan Smith of Groton Open Spaces and Laurie Whiting from the Ledyard Garden Club for a winter sowing party. Winter sowing is planting seeds, especially those that need a period of cold to break dormancy, in pots. The pots are left outside and ignored for months. In the spring, the seedlings go into the ground or are potted up to get bigger.

The group made seed gardens out of used plastic milk/soda bottles and plastic salad/fruit containers. Most of the eventual seedlings will be transplanted onto Avalonia preserves when the weather warms up in late spring.
