Avalonia’s Building Bridges…to Bozrah’s Newest Preserve: Glemboski-Ous Opens Aug. 9

Story and photos by Gail Kahover

A large aluminum bridge has been installed at Glemboski-Ous Preserve near Bozrah, allowing visitors quick and easy access to the many features of Avalonia’s newest property.

The 1,980-pound structure was built totally by volunteers over the course of two days. Thirteen volunteers spent June 18th building the actual bridge structure, screwing in large bolts to make the decking and foundations. Buoyed by ropes tied to nearby trees and a winch from an ATV, a team of 15 volunteers on July 19th pulled the 40-foot-long bridge over Trading Cove Brook to its final resting place.

Additionally, a large group of volunteers from Eversource helped with Avalonia’s stewardship efforts on June 18th, clearing up brush on trails elsewhere on the property.

Watch the hoisting of the bridge!

Glemboski-Ous includes 159 acres of open woodlands and currently has about 3.5-miles of trails. The new bridge is just a short walk away from a large recently-constructed handicapped accessible parking lot made up of packed earth and dirt.

A grand-opening for Glemboski-Ous will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 9. Featured will be a dedication, ribbon-cutting ceremony, refreshments, and a guided hike. A rain date is scheduled for Aug. 10.

The preserve is located on South Road in Bozrah, one mile from Route 163. The parking lot is on South Road across from 102 South Road.
