Osprey Platform Upgrades
By John Swenarton
Three osprey nesting platforms in Stonington succumbed to the heavy snow and high winds we all experienced this past winter. But thanks to a generous donation of materials and a dedicated corps of volunteers, ospreys returning this spring found new and upgraded platforms waiting for them. Two platforms at Cottrell Marsh Preserve collapsed and had to be completely rebuilt. Another platform at Wamphassuc Neck Marshes was on the verge of collapse, leaning severely, and was righted with new bracing. Special thanks to Riverhead Building Supply for donated lumber, and a terrific group of volunteers: Greg Decker, Mark Alexander, David Swenarton, Teddy Peglow, Conor Feeney, Susan Gonzalez, Amy Gonsalves, Al Seifert, Chuck Pease, Mark Hibbard, and Robin Swenarton. We’re happy to report osprey nesting activity on all three platforms!
