SUMMARY:Youth Winter Hike at TriTown
DESCRIPTION:The weather outside may be frightful\, but a winter hike can be delightful\, and to encourage you — as if Avalonia members needed any encouragement — we’re offering a special kid’s adventure on Martin Luther King Day\, Monday\, January 20th\, from 2 to 3p.m. at the TriTown Ridgeline Forest Preserve in North Stonington. Naturalist and long-time youth leader Kelly Allen will lead 8 to 12 year olds and their adults in search of winter wildlife over relatively easy TriTown trails for about two miles\, and if the weather cooperates\, we’ll snowshoe a shorter route. After the trek we will enjoy hot chocolate at the Miller Road trailhead. \nParticipants will need:\nNon-cotton base layers\nWool socks\nWinter boots\nWinter gloves\nWinter hat\nWaterproof weather appropriate outer shells\, such as snow pants and winter jacket shell\nA full water bottle and a high energy snack (candy bars with nuts are perfect!)\nSnowshoes (extras if you have them) \nLocation: TriTown Ridgeline Forest\, 90 Miller Rd\, North Stonington trailhead \nIn the event of truly frightful conditions – bitter cold\, steady rain\, strong winds\, more than moderate snow — the reschedule date is Sunday\, January 26\, 2 to 3pm. \nFor more information and to register\, contact Kelly: rooted2wanderlust@gmail.com \nphoto by Bruce Fellman

SUMMARY:Full Snow Moon Hike at TriTown
DESCRIPTION:Date: February 8\, 2020\nTime: 6–9 PM\nLocation: TriTown Forest Preserve\, 90 Miller Rd. trailhead. \nFebruary’s full moon is known as the Snow Moon\, and whether it rises over a leaf-litter brown or dazzlingly white landscape\, the TriTown Forest Preserve in North Stonington is a wonderful place to enjoy the mid-winter lunar show. Join veteran naturalist Kelly Allen on Saturday evening\, February 8th\, for a nighttime adventure that will be a combination\, depending on your inclination\, of pre-Valentine’s Day romance and bracing trek. Given the difficult terrain and the darkness\, you’ll want to leave the kids at home. Our route\, starting at the trailhead\, will cover a distance of about 2.5 miles and follow the Blue loop west up and over Lambert Mountain and back down the west Yellow trail along the ridgeline—a trek definitely not for the faint-hearted (or anyone out of shape). If we’re lucky\, we might even hoot up some owls! \nTruly inclement weather like sleet\, hail\, polar vortex cold (below zero)\, blizzard winds and downpours will cancel. \nPlease bring the following items: \n\nSnowshoes (extras if you have them)\, microcleats\, trekking poles\nHead lamp (with extra batteries!)\nNon-cotton base layers\nWool socks\nWinter boots\nWinter gloves\nWinter hat\nBuff or balaclava\nFleece jacket as appropriate\nWeatherproof outer shells\, such as snow pants and winter jacket shell.\nBackpack to carry your things\nA full water bottle (that does not leak) and high-energy snacks.\n\nphoto by Bruce Fellman

SUMMARY:A Vernal Pool Adventure\, Babcock Ridge Preserve (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to Coronavirus concerns. Avalonia trails remain open\, but visitors need to use caution\, avoid large groups\, and use good judgement when meeting other hikers. \nWhile winter has hardly lived up to its name\, an amazing variety of frogs\, salamanders\, and aquatic invertebrates have spent the colder season in hiding. But with the arrival of spring\, they’re coming back to life in the temporary wetlands known as vernal pools. At twilight\, we’ll hike the trail to a group of vernals in Avalonia’s Babcock Ridge Preserve to search for such creatures as Wood Frogs and Spring Peepers\, Spotted and Marbled Salamanders\, and Fairy Shrimp. We might also hear the booming hoots of Barred Owls and the peents of Woodcock. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBring a flashlight\, wear warm clothes and waterproof boots\, and don’t forget your spirit of adventure on this family-friendly exploration of a fascinating part of the natural world. \nWalk leader Bruce Fellman has been introducing people to vernal pool life for almost half-a-century. \nphotos: Bruce Fellman

SUMMARY:Preston Nature Preserve Walk
DESCRIPTION:The 56 acres of meadows\, woods\, and wetlands of the Preston Nature Preserve are at their prettiest in August\, when the fields are dominated by Joe Pye Weed\, various goldenrods\, milkweeds\, grasses\, thistles\, asters\, and a remarkable expanse of Bee Balm\, to name some of the botanical treasures. The abundant blossoms always attract an array of exquisite butterflies\, from Monarchs and swallowtails to fritillaries and skippers\, with a collection of mesmerizing hummingbird moths thrown in for good measure. And that’s just the tip of the insect iceberg: PNP in August is alive with dragonflies\, beetles\, true bugs\, bees and wasps\, and other invertebrates. \nJoin naturalist Bruce Fellman on Saturday\, August 14th\, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\, for an exploration of the plants and animals—yes\, it’s a great birding spot\, too—that thrive along PNP’s gentle trails. Bring binoculars\, hand lenses\, cameras\, notebooks\, your natural history curiosity\, and\, if you have them\, your kids and grandkids\, since this is a Hike and Seek area that we’ll also be using for a smart-phone-based digital scavenger hunt. \nPlease register for the walk today.  For more information\, please contact our hike leader\, Bruce Fellman at bruce.fellman@yale.edu; for information about Hike and Seek\, click here. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Poetry Reading w/ Connecticut Poet Laureate\, Margaret Gibson
DESCRIPTION:Exciting news! Avalonia’s own Margaret Gibson has published another important book of poetry and will be presenting poems from it on Sunday\, Sept 26 at 4:00pm at the Arts Mystic Cafe in Mystic. Margaret’s poetry is nationally-recognized and she is Connecticut’s current Poet Laureate. Tickets for the reading are $15 for regular admission and $5 for students. Don’t miss this wonderful event! \nWith The Glass Globe\, celebrated poet Margaret Gibson completes a trilogy distinguished by its meditative focus on the author’s experience of her late husband’s Alzheimer’s disease. In this new collection\, she blends elegies of personal bereavement with elegies for the earth during the ongoing global crisis wrought by climate change. Gibson’s poems personalize the vastness of climate catastrophe while simultaneously enlarging personal grief beyond the limits of self-absorption. A work of great compassion and vision\, The Glass Globe is a necessary\, heartbreaking book from one of our most compelling poets. To order your copy\, please call LSU Press at (800-848-6224).

SUMMARY:A Vernal Pool Adventure\, Babcock Ridge Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Babcock Rd\, North Stonington \nSpring is right around the corner\, and the frogs\, salamanders\, and aquatic invertebrates that have spent the colder season in hiding will be coming back to life in the temporary wetlands known as vernal pools. \nAt twilight\, we’ll hike the trail—it’s about a half-mile\, somewhat hilly walk—to a group of vernals in Avalonia’s Babcock Ridge Preserve to search for such creatures as Wood Frogs and Spring Peepers\, Spotted and Marbled Salamanders\, and Fairy Shrimp. We might also hear the booming hoots of Barred Owls and the peents of Woodcock. \nBring a flashlight\, wear warm clothes and waterproof boots\, and don’t forget your spirit of adventure on this family-friendly exploration of a fascinating part of the natural world. Walk leader Bruce Fellman has been introducing people to vernal pool life for almost half-a-century. \nAll attendees must be fully vaccinated and\, if possible\, boosted; since we’ll be outside\, masks are not required. \nNote: heavy rain will postpone to the 24th\, same time\, but light rain will be just perfect for bringing out the critters; dress accordingly.  \nRegister

SUMMARY:Avalonia Close-to-Earth-Day 2022 Walk
DESCRIPTION:photo credit: Bruce Fellman \nCelebrate Spring\, Earth Day\, and Clean Water at the Benedict Benson Preserve\nOne of the critical precursors of the passage of the Clean Water Act\, the landmark federal legislation whose 50 years of making a difference we celebrate throughout 2022\, is Earth Day\, the consciousness-raising holiday for the planet that began in 1970. As part of Avalonia’s ongoing tribute to the CWA\, join naturalist and guide Bruce Fellman as we wade into moving waters\, figuratively\, if not literally\, at the Benedict Benson Preserve on Saturday\, April 23rd\, shortly after Earth Day\, from 10 a.m. until noon\, in North Stonington to watch the refuge’s wetlands and its centerpiece stream come to life: a tribute to wise stewardship. \nIn keeping with our theme\, we’ll pay close attention to the area around Lantern Brook\, a delightful woodland stream that flows through the heart of the preserve and is wonderfully photogenic as it tumbles down a boulder field left behind by the glaciers that shaped this land. The area around the brook is paradise for botanists interested in mosses\, ferns\, lichens\, and wildflowers\, and while there are certain to be such stalwarts as Wood anemones\, a number of violets\, and Marsh marigolds in bloom\, there’s one botanical gem known as the hepatica that we’ll scramble up a favored hillside to seek out. Hepaticas thrive in specific\, rather “sweet” soil conditions unusual in our woods\, but Benson has the right stuff in one area.  \nThe Preserve features a typical Southern New England post-agricultural-abandonment upland forest dominated by oaks\, beeches\, birches\, and hickories\, many of them fully mature. Some are home to striking Pileated Woodpeckers\, while others support a wide array of hardwood-forest songbirds\, the most intriguing of which is the Cerulean Warbler. This stunning bird\, which is listed as a Species of Special Concern in Connecticut\, has been seen and heard at Benson and the surrounding area\, and is one of the treasures we’ll be looking for as we walk the approximately mile and a half trail system in search of signs of spring. \nThe trailhead for the Benedict Benson Preserve is located at 100 Swantown Hill Road in North Stonington.  A small parking area is on the West side of the road and there’s more parking on either side of Swantown. For more information and to register\, visit the Events Calendar of Avalonia’s website: avalonia.org/events/ Please note: parts of the trail are pretty rugged\, so while my pace is always family-friendly\, the terrain\, particularly our scramble up a rocky hillside in search of wildflowers\, might not be suitable for small kids and the occasional elder. You’ll want to wear waterproof hiking boots\, and trekking poles might be a good idea\, too. Bring water and an energy bar\, and\, of course\, binoculars and cameras.  Don’t hesitate to call or email: 860-599-4867\, or fellnature@sbcglobal.net. \nRegister Here
