DESCRIPTION:Freedom First Wildlife Rehabilitation\, Connecticut’s only owl-exclusive rescue organization\, will present an educational program on the species\, their rehabilitation\, and habitat needs.   \nTwo live owls will participate in the event! \nThis very special organization\, located in Waterford\, cares for critically injured birds\, many of whom sustain injuries caused by human carelessness. SUMMARY:Exploring the Nature of Twilight: A Crepuscular Adventure

Service animals only\, please\, at these events. \nSaturday\, September 26\, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM  \nJoin guide Bruce Fellman in Donald R. Henne Memorial Preserve for a walk of mystery\, discovery\, and wonder. (Rain date next day\, same time.) Bring binoculars\, camera gear\, hand lenses\, water\, insect repellant and sunscreen . . . and please download the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s Merlin Bird ID app to your smartphone in advance of our walk (merlin.allaboutbirds.org/download). \nBruce Fellman is a veteran naturalist\, teacher\, and environmental photojournalist with more than a half-century of experience introducing people to the natural world. \n  \nAddress: 113 Babcock Road\, North Stonington (0.9 miles from Wyassup Road or 0.8 miles from Route 49). The parking area is on the north side of the road. The trailhead for the Henne walk is nearby. \n  \nREGISTER HERE \n  \nA message from Bruce: “Poets and biologists alike are drawn to the special period of each day around dawn and dusk when the natural world is best described by the term ‘crepuscular.’ The word is derived from the Latin for twilight\, and as the afternoon transitions to evening\, we’ll hike through the Henne Preserve in search of a diverse group of animals\, from beavers and bats to migrating birds and resident owls\, that emerge from hiding and begin to be active in the time of decreasing light around sunset. The Henne Preserve’s 100 acres of uplands and wetlands feature an abundance of ecological diversity\, and the dusky hours can offer the best opportunity to observe often furtive wildlife. (The same is true around dawn\, as the nightshift creatures retire for the day.) On this slow-paced journey of discovery\, we’ll use our eyes and ears\, along with assists from technology that can translate sounds\, even the inaudible high-pitched bat calls\, into visual depictions called sonograms\, to meet the meet the members of the crepuscular chorus.” \n  \n  \nAccessibility Note \nParking: Small\, off-street lot with packed surface\, no designated accessible space\, room for 7-8 cars. Additional parking along the road. Short walk\, approximately 100 feet\, along the side of Babcock Road to access the Henne Trailhead at the north end of the preserve. Trails: Trails are narrow throughout\, often with room enough for only one person\, some slopes\, some protrusions into pathway\, and occasional wet areas\, some of which are crossed using narrow wooden bridges. Off-pathway exploration through open woods to a hillside of downed trees felled by beavers. Wildlife observation area atop five-foot-wide boardwalk that spans open water is somewhat rough\, uneven\, and wobbly in places\, especially in times of high water. Communication: This walk will be amplified and may include live sonograms that provide pictorial representation of frog and bird calls. SUMMARY:Invasive Plant Removal and Trail Preparation at the Louis and Gladys Bond Preserve in Montville/Oakdale
DESCRIPTION:Please join Avalonia’s stewardship staff and volunteers on Tuesday\, September 29 from 9:00 am – Noon at our newest and largest property (670.22 acres!)\, the Louis and Gladys Bond Preserve. \n \nThis free event is open to all-comers!\n \nParking and meeting access area will be on the south side of the property along the northwesterly side of Chesterfield Road in Montville/Oakdale. From Route 85\, head east for .25 miles and our entrance will be on the left hand side just passing 777 Chesterfield Road\, the Power Lines\, and Bogue Brook.\n \nGloves\, sturdy footwear\, bug repellent\, and drinking water are recommended. While tools will be provided for your use\, feel free to bring your own loppers\, pruners\, hand saws and/or other plant removal tools. \nWe will begin at 9:00 and work as long as spirits remain high\, and as weather allows. Work at your own pace and stay as long as you wish.  \nRain Date will be on the following day\, September 30th\, at the same time.

Service animals only\, please\, at these events. \nSaturday\, October 10\, 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM  \nThis collaborative event between Otis Library (Norwich)\, Connecticut Land Conservation Council (CLCC)\, and Avalonia begins at 10:00 AM with a guided exploration of Cedar Wood Preserve in Norwich\, followed by pizza and a conservation program at the library. Lead presenter is Vanessa Daye\, Community Conservation Coordinator at CLCC. Youth are especially encouraged to attend! (In the event of inclement weather\, the walk will be cancelled and the program will begin in the library at 12 noon.) \n  \nREGISTER HERE \n  \nPreserve address: Across the street from 183 North Wawecus Hill Road\, Norwich \nOtis Library address: 261 Main Street\, Norwich\, CT\nThe program will take place in the Community Room on the second floor. \n  \nAccessibility Note:  \nThe parking lot of the preserve includes one designated accessible space. Trail begins at lot. An accessible boardwalk over a vernal pool leads to a meadow with relatively level trails\, although there is an occasional dip. Trail surfaces are clipped grass and approximately three to four feet wide. Walk will be amplified. Sign language interpretation may be available upon request. \nThe library offers many accessible features. Street parking includes several designated accessible spaces. Entry doors are automated. Sign language interpretation and amplification may be available upon request.   \nFor more information about the accessibility of this event\, contact Avalonia at info@avalonialc.org or 860-884-8500. \n  \n  \nAbout the Presenters \n  \nSalma Huque with her colleague\, Jake Frame\nSalma Huque \nSalma is a Master of Environmental Management candidate at the Yale School on the Environment specializing in Water Resources. She is interested in watershed management\, public land use\, and conservation in the American West. Salma holds a BA in Economics from Reed College. Her work experience includes time as an environmental consultant in Oregon\, a research assistant for the U.S. Forest Service’s Intermountain West region\, and a water conservation data scientist in western Colorado. She has a background in coding and loves the challenge of communicating data-heavy analyses to the public. With a Co-Researcher\, Salma completed a project on Avalonia preserves that enabled the organization to submit twenty National Diversity Database requests to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. \n  \n \nPeter Paton \nA conservation biologist\, Peter Paton has studied the population ecology of birds and amphibians for the past 50 years. He grew up in Colorado\, and earned a B.S. in Biology from Lewis and Clark College in Portland\, Oregon; a M.S. from Colorado State University\, where he studied birds as an airstrike hazard in Hilo\, Hawaii; and a Ph.D. from Utah State University\, where he studied the breeding ecology of Snowy Plovers at the Great Salt Lake. For two years after receiving his Ph.D.\, he monitored birds at Denali National Park. In 1995\, Peter joined the Department of National Resources Science at the University of Rhode Island\, from which he recently retired. During his time at URI\, he and his students studied shorebirds\, wading birds\, and passerines throughout southern New England. For the past 14 years\, he has been studying Common and Roseate Terns on Great Gull Island\, where he still is active in research and management. From 2024-2025\, he and his students tracked 30 adult Great Black-backed Gulls breeding on Block Island National Wildlife Refuge (R.I.) and Avalonia’s South Dumpling Island. The results of this research improve understanding of partial migration\, offshore distribution\, and year-round resource use of Great Black-backed Gulls in an increasingly important segment of the species’ range. \n  \n \nEvan Zocco \nEvan Zocco is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Connecticut. His work looks at how drones\, aerial photos\, and computer programs can help us better understand changes in the environment. He studies how beavers change streams\, wetlands\, and floodplains by building dams and holding back water. His research focuses on finding better ways to map these changes over large areas\, especially in places where water may be hidden by trees\, shrubs\, or other wetland plants. This work can help with wetland mapping\, wildlife habitat monitoring\, conservation planning\, and decisions about land and water management.
