DESCRIPTION:Please consider joining us at Founders Preserve on Saturday 5/9 from 9-11 am. We will continue to clear vegetation that has grown on the beaver dam (built on top of the human constructed dam!)\, allowing for required safety inspections and future bridge construction so we can access the other side of the brook.\nBelow the dam\, looking up at Tri-brook Pond\n \nWe will meet at the parking lot at 334 Colonel Ledyard Highway\, Ledyard. Bring good waterproof boots\, work gloves for dealing with briars\, loppers\, hand saws\, and a water bottle. SUMMARY:Restoration Planting at Parke Memorial Preserve along the  Shunock River
DESCRIPTION:Please join Avalonia stewardship staff and volunteers at the Parke Memorial Preserve in North Stonington\, on Wednesday May 13 at 9:00 to help in the restoration of floodplain/riparian habitat along the Shunock River.  This free event is open to all-comers! \nSpring 2025 native tree and shrub planting\nOver the past four years great strides have been made at Parke Memorial in reducing the amount of Japanese knotweed and in encouraging native pollinators species along the dam.  While the efforts to manage the knotweed continue\, we have now reached a point where it is appropriate to plant native trees and shrubs east of the dam and along the Shunock River. Ninebark\, sweetspire\, spicebush\, elderberry\, viburnum\, swamp white oak\, river birch\, and black gum are just a few of the species we hope to reestablish on this site. \nThe parking area at the preserve can only safely accommodate our work vehicle\, so we plan to meet at the parking lot across from the North Stonington Town Hall (40 Main Street).  Depending on the number of participants\, we’ll either walk or carpool (less than a 1/4 of a mile) to the Parke Memorial Preserve\, one of several that Avalonia stewards along the Shunock River.  There is a fairly steep decline from the trailhead to the work site\, but it is otherwise close to and visible from the road. \nGloves\, sturdy footwear\, bug repellent\, and drinking water are recommended. While tools will be provided for your use\, feel free to bring your own shovel or other planting implements.   \nWe will begin at 9:00 and work as long as spirits remain high\, and as weather allows. Work at your own pace and stay as long as you wish.   \n  \n  \n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We’re sharing this on behalf of DEEP. \n  \nBackground \nThe Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) has released its Draft Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) Initiative Program Evaluation for public review. This critical report\, mandated by Public Act 25-125\, evaluates how Connecticut can integrate and advance NBS in state programs supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation\, ecosystem resilience\, and biodiversity. \nCLCC has been actively engaged in advancing nature-based solutions as part of Connecticut public policy. We encourage land trusts\, communities\, and other conservation partners to participate and help shape the future of this important statewide initiative. \n  \nWhy Your Voice Matters \nNature-based solutions—such as forest conservation\, wetlands protection\, healthy soils\, and urban tree planting—are among our most potent and cost-effective defenses against the impacts of climate change and offer myriad benefits for public health\, the economy\, and the environment. This evaluation covers dozens of state programs\, including critical funding sources like the Open Space & Watershed Land Acquisition (OSWA) grants\, and offers suggestions to advance NBS in state policy. Public feedback will directly inform the Final NBS Report due later this summer. \n  \nAttend a Listening Session \nJoin CT DEEP to learn more about the draft report and provide your input on how Connecticut should advance these vital conservation tools. SUMMARY:A Multisensational Nature Adventure at Knox Preserve in Stonington
DESCRIPTION:The Avalonia Land Conservancy’s Knox Preserve\, which sits along the Stonington coast\, is a four-season treasure trove of natural wonders\, and it’s especially beautiful in June\, as spring transitions to summer\, noisy birds pause their northbound migrations to rest and feed for a while\, an abundance of wildflowers bloom\, and a plethora of pollinating insects\, from bees to butterflies\, take advantage of the floral riches. We’ll hike Knox’s gentle trails—and even a historic graveyard—at a slow pace designed to enable everyone to use all of their senses on a journey of environmental discovery\, co-sponsored with the South East Connecticut Community Center of the Blind\, to experience\, as fully as possible\, the delights of nature. The walk will be amplified\, and walk leader Bruce Fellman is a veteran naturalist\, teacher\, and photojournalist with half a century of innovative and engaging experience that has enabled people of all ages\, inclinations\, and abilities to connect to the natural world.\n \nRSVP HERE\n \nParking: We’ll meet at the preserve gate\, which is across the street from the on-street parking on Wilcox Road.\n \nTrail: The Knox Preserve trail we’ll be walking is about three feet wide\, with a dirt center and grassy sides. While the pathway does not meet formal accessibility standards\, most of it is very level\, but there are some tripping hazards\, notably roots\, and some sections will require scrambling over rocks. Participants may do the whole hike\, which is about a mile long\, or an abridged version tailored to individual preferences and abilities. In all cases\, our pace will be leisurely and provide plenty of opportunity for multi-sensory experiences and questions.\n \nCommunication: The walk will be amplified and will include live sonograms that provide pictorial representation of bird calls. DESCRIPTION:2026 CT TRAILS DAY CELEBRATION \n  \n \nOn Saturday\, June 6\, from 1 -3 pm\, join us for a Trails Day Hike at Avery Preserve in Ledyard. This will be a leisurely walk along the orange-loop-trail and some of the side trails in Avery Preserve West Tract. Ambling along\, we will pause\, notice\, and observe the numerous plants\, birds\, trees\, streams\, vernal pools\, and sheep farm remnants along our way. Bring your binoculars\, loupes\, cameras\, or just yourself. You never know what we may find! SUMMARY:Wildlife Habitat Enhancement at the Hunter Brook Preserve in Norwich
DESCRIPTION:Join Avalonia Stewardship staff\, interns\, and volunteers on the morning of June 10th from 9:30 -12:00 at our Hunter Brook Preserve in Norwich and be a part of our continuing efforts at enhancing wildlife habitat on this beautiful 27-acre preserve!   \nWork will consist of implementing recommendations associated with the recent Audubon Forest Bird Habitat Assessments\, in particular the removal of the invasive plant\, Japanese barberry from along the brook.   Participants will receive training in invasive plant identification\, best management practices\, and removal techniques. \nThe necessary tools will be supplied for volunteer use.  It is suggested that volunteers bring thick gloves\, sturdy and waterproof footwear\, and drinking water.  If you have loppers\, clippers\, or digging implements feel free to bring them.  Light refeshments will be provided. \nPlease register so that we can better plan for this no-cost event. SUMMARY:Join Avalonia Land Conservancy as it hosts its inaugural BioBlitz at the Davis Family Forest Preserve in North Stonington!
DESCRIPTION:In an effort to learn more about the biodiversity of our various preserves and to make more informed stewardship decisions\, we have begun to enlist the public’s help by hosting a series of iNaturalist BioBlitzes over the summer. Whether new to iNaturalist or an “an old hand”\, data collected will help us in a numbers ways from protecting state listed plant and animals species to responsible trail building to updating preserve management plans. It is also fun and educational! \nThe first of these BioBlitzes will be at the Dorothy G. Davis Family Forest on Monday July 13 from 9-12.  \nThis 27-acres preserve offers several interesting habitat types including a steep ridge running north to southwest along the western boundary of the preserve. Adjacent to this ridgeline is a several acre knoll with a flattened plateau which drops off into the red maple swamp at the southeast corner of the preserve. There is a small intermittent stream that snakes along the southern boundary of the preserve and feeds into the wetland. The Green Fall River serves as the eastern boundary of the preserve. \nIf you are unfamiliar with iNaturalist and the BioBlitz format\, there are a number of helpful resources that might help you to get you started. You can also reach out directly to our stewardship team (before the scheduled event)! \nIf you already have an active iNaturalist account\, we invite you to join the Davis Family Forest Project by clicking here.  \nWe will meet at the parking area for the adjacent Herman E. SUMMARY:BioBlitz at the Glemboski-Ous Preserve in Bozrah and Montville!
DESCRIPTION:To better understand the biodiversity of our preserves and make informed stewardship decisions\, we’re inviting the public to participate in a series of summer iNaturalist BioBlitzes. Whether you’re new to iNaturalist or an experienced user\, every observation helps us protect state-listed species\, guide responsible trail development\, and improve preserve management. Along the way\, you’ll discover more about the natural world\, making it both fun and educational. \nThis week’s BioBlitz will be at the Glemboski-Ous Preserve on Monday\, July 20 from 9-12.  \nTh Glemboski-Ous Preserve’s nearly 160-acres encompass a variety of habitats\, from wetlands and rocky outcrops to upland forest. It straddles and protects a major named stream\, Trading Cove Brook\, serving as the boundary between Bozrah and Montville. It boasts nearly 1.2 miles of frontage along Trading Cove Brook\, a “Class A” surface water stream and “cold water” habitat stream. Together with The Nature Conservancy’s nearly 300-acre Milo Light Preserve\, which borders the property to the south\, the Glemboski-Ous property is vital to establishing a greenway and a very large core forest block on the Bozrah-Montville town boundary. \nOur focus will be on a portion of the north/south branch of Trading Cove Brook\, where a new trail is proposed. \nIf you are unfamiliar with iNaturalist and the BioBlitz\, there are many helpful resources that will get you started. DESCRIPTION:To better understand the biodiversity of our preserves and make informed stewardship decisions\, we’re inviting you to participate in a series of summer iNaturalist BioBlitzes. Whether you’re new to iNaturalist or an experienced user\, every observation helps us protect state-listed species\, guide responsible trail development\, and improve preserve management. Along the way\, you’ll discover more about the natural world\, making it both fun and educational. \nThis coming week’s BioBlitz will be at the Benedict Benson Preserve on Monday\, July 27 from 9-12.  \nVernal pool along the southern edge of the eastern tract\nAtop North Stonington’s Swantown Hill\, the Benedict Benson Preserve’s nearly 94-acres encompass a variety of habitats\, from vernal pools\, riparian corridors and rocky outcrops to upland forest. It sits astride both the Mystic and Pawcatuck River watersheds and protects approx. 2000 linear feet of Lantern Hill Brook\, the headwaters of the Mystic River. Our focus for the day will be on the 28-acre eastern portion of the preserve \nIf you are unfamiliar with iNaturalist and the BioBlitz\, there are many helpful resources that will get you started. You can also reach out directly to our stewardship team (before the scheduled event)! DESCRIPTION:Please join Avalonia’s stewardship staff and volunteers on Tuesday\, September 15 from 9:00 am – Noon at our newest and largest property (670.22 acres!)\, the Louis and Gladys Bond Preserve. In this first of three events\, you will help in the removal of invasive plants and to enhance access to the water for visibility and for future watercraft recreation.  This free event is open to all-comers!\n \nParking and meeting access area will be on the south side of the property along the northwesterly side of Chesterfield Road in Montville/Oakdale. From Route 85\, head east for .25 miles and our entrance will be on the left hand side just passing 777 Chesterfield Road\, the Power Lines\, and Bogue Brook.\n \nGloves\, sturdy footwear\, bug repellent\, and drinking water are recommended. While tools will be provided for your use\, feel free to bring your own loppers\, pruners\, hand saws and/or other plant removal tools. \nWe will begin at 9:00 and work as long as spirits remain high\, and as weather allows. Work at your own pace and stay as long as you wish.  \nRain Date will be on the following day\, September 16th at the same time.

SUMMARY:Continued Restoration work at Parke Memorial Preserve along the Shunock River
DESCRIPTION:Please join Avalonia stewardship staff and volunteers at the Parke Memorial Preserve in North Stonington\, on Thursday September 17 from 9:00- Noon to help in the restoration of floodplain/riparian habitat along the Shunock River.  This free event is open to all-comers! \nSpring 2026 planting at Parke Memorial\nOver the past four years great strides have been made at Parke Memorial in reducing the amount of Japanese knotweed and in encouraging native pollinators species along the dam.  While the efforts to manage the knotweed continue\, we also want to give recently planted native trees and shrubs east of the dam and along the Shunock River every advantage. To that end\, we’ll spend some time removing any weeds or vines that might be impeding their growth.  Ninebark\, sweetspire\, spicebush\, elderberry\, viburnum\, swamp white oak\, river birch\, and black gum are just a few of the species we have begun to reestablish on this site. \nThe parking area at the preserve can only safely accommodate our work vehicle\, so we plan to meet at the parking lot across from the North Stonington Town Hall (40 Main Street).  Depending on the number of participants\, we’ll either walk or carpool (less than a 1/4 of a mile) to the Parke Memorial Preserve\, one of several that Avalonia stewards along the Shunock River.  There is a fairly steep decline from the trailhead to the work site\, but it is otherwise close to and visible from the road. \nGloves\, sturdy footwear\, bug repellent\, and drinking water are recommended. While tools will be provided for your use\, feel free to bring your own clippers and loppers. \nWe will begin at 9:00 and work as long as spirits remain high\, and as weather allows. Work at your own pace and stay as long as you wish.   \n  \n  \n\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n

In her words: “Writing poetry is an act of attention and receptivity. You study whatever it is that strikes your attention – whether a scarlet tanager\, river\, field\, or forest\, whether mother\, daughter\, alcoholic\, photographer\, lover. You take what’s given into that part of the self that inquires\, tests\, embraces\, and embodies. SUMMARY:Exploring the Nature of Twilight: A Crepuscular Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Walktober is almost here! \nThe Last Green Valley’s fabulously successful annual series of activities starts in September\, and Avalonia’s four offerings go right through the whole season! Registration is required for all Avalonia Walktober programs. (If an event is rescheduled because of weather\, you’ll want to know.) Service animals only\, please\, at these events. \nSaturday\, September 26\, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM  \nJoin guide Bruce Fellman in Donald R. Henne Memorial Preserve for a walk of mystery\, discovery\, and wonder. (Rain date next day\, same time.) Bring binoculars\, camera gear\, hand lenses\, water\, insect repellant and sunscreen . . . and please download the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s Merlin Bird ID app to your smartphone in advance of our walk (merlin.allaboutbirds.org/download). \nBruce Fellman is a veteran naturalist\, teacher\, and environmental photojournalist with more than a half-century of experience introducing people to the natural world. \n  \nAddress: 113 Babcock Road\, North Stonington (0.9 miles from Wyassup Road or 0.8 miles from Route 49). The parking area is on the north side of the road. The trailhead for the Henne walk is nearby. \n  \nREGISTER HERE \n  \nA message from Bruce: “Poets and biologists alike are drawn to the special period of each day around dawn and dusk when the natural world is best described by the term ‘crepuscular.’ The word is derived from the Latin for twilight\, and as the afternoon transitions to evening\, we’ll hike through the Henne Preserve in search of a diverse group of animals\, from beavers and bats to migrating birds and resident owls\, that emerge from hiding and begin to be active in the time of decreasing light around sunset. The Henne Preserve’s 100 acres of uplands and wetlands feature an abundance of ecological diversity\, and the dusky hours can offer the best opportunity to observe often furtive wildlife. (The same is true around dawn\, as the nightshift creatures retire for the day.) On this slow-paced journey of discovery\, we’ll use our eyes and ears\, along with assists from technology that can translate sounds\, even the inaudible high-pitched bat calls\, into visual depictions called sonograms\, to meet the meet the members of the crepuscular chorus.” \n  \n  \nAccessibility Note \nParking: Small\, off-street lot with packed surface\, no designated accessible space\, room for 7-8 cars. Additional parking along the road. Short walk\, approximately 100 feet\, along the side of Babcock Road to access the Henne Trailhead at the north end of the preserve. Trails: Trails are narrow throughout\, often with room enough for only one person\, some slopes\, some protrusions into pathway\, and occasional wet areas\, some of which are crossed using narrow wooden bridges. Off-pathway exploration through open woods to a hillside of downed trees felled by beavers. Wildlife observation area atop five-foot-wide boardwalk that spans open water is somewhat rough\, uneven\, and wobbly in places\, especially in times of high water. Communication: This walk will be amplified and may include live sonograms that provide pictorial representation of frog and bird calls. SUMMARY:Invasive Plant Removal and Trail Preparation at the Louis and Gladys Bond Preserve in Montville/Oakdale
DESCRIPTION:Please join Avalonia’s stewardship staff and volunteers on Tuesday\, September 29 from 9:00 am – Noon at our newest and largest property (670.22 acres!)\, the Louis and Gladys Bond Preserve. \n \nThis free event is open to all-comers!\n \nParking and meeting access area will be on the south side of the property along the northwesterly side of Chesterfield Road in Montville/Oakdale. From Route 85\, head east for .25 miles and our entrance will be on the left hand side just passing 777 Chesterfield Road\, the Power Lines\, and Bogue Brook.\n \nGloves\, sturdy footwear\, bug repellent\, and drinking water are recommended. While tools will be provided for your use\, feel free to bring your own loppers\, pruners\, hand saws and/or other plant removal tools. \nWe will begin at 9:00 and work as long as spirits remain high\, and as weather allows. Work at your own pace and stay as long as you wish.  \nRain Date will be on the following day\, September 30th\, at the same time.
